The Christmas season kicked off at LAS with the annual tree lighting ceremony featuring a performance by the Doris French Elementary School choir. The event is one of several throughout the year that showcases local talent in the airport.
“The school is close to the airport, and this event, it’s part of our community enrichment,” said Director of Aviation Jim Chrisley. “We invite them to come here and use this venue to share all the hard work and practice they’ve done. It’s a great way to not only allow them to be seen by the public, but also to help make our holiday season brighter.”
After the musical performance, Chrisley called up the children to help flip the switch and light the tree.
“When the kids get to come up, they're so excited. We do the countdown, we pull the lever, and just like that, the lights come on and you could just see the excitement in their eyes and faces,” he said.
In addition to the live entertainment, the event included an important message from law enforcement about safe driving during the holidays.
“This is a time of the year where we get together as family and friends. We enjoy each other's company, and sometimes that involves enjoying a few cocktails and a few drinks,” said Lt. Bret Ficklin, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. “There are plenty of opportunities with friends, with rideshare, with taxis, that can get you where you need to go, safely, without endangering yourself or somebody else.”
