Firefighters with the LAS Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting unit, or ARFF, engaged in their annual FAA-mandated live fire training.

The team practiced operating fire engines, turrets, and hoses using a mock aircraft that was set ablaze with propane. They also worked on aircraft interior techniques as if they were conducting a rescue.

“This is our daily job we would do if there were an emergency,” said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Carnahan. “Getting to do it with live fire is rare, thankfully, so keeping in practice is important — it’s helps us out a lot.”

LAS firefighters work out of Station 13, which is located directly on the airfield adjacent to runways and taxiways, ensuring easy access and a speedy response to aircraft emergencies. Firefighters train and test their equipment daily to maintain the highest standards in aviation safety.
